[Review] Redmi Note 4 - Budget Smartphone for Parents

After two months using this Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, I can finally give my opinion on this RM799 Smartphone. I've using Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge for a long time and had initial perception that Redmi Note 4 might not be up to par or feeds my need. After using it for quite some time, I would say Redmi Note 4 might not be suitable for extreme and high performance usage, but the specs provided is good enough for daily usage and I was quite amazed with the long battery life.

Currently Malaysia has two variant of Redmi Note 4: 3GB 32GB and 4GB 64GB version priced at RM949 (RM150 extra)

Redmi Note 4 Design: Premium Metal Body with aluminium lining for premium feel

With a RM799 price tag, Redmi Note 4 actually has a simple yet sleek design. Premium metal body, curvy edge at the side with metalic lining around the border, camera and finger-print sensor. There's a 3-Choose-2 Hybrid SIM Tray slot for your Redmi Note 4 hence you can put either TWO sim cards or one Micro-SD Memory card with a SIM for extra storage. Below are more photos of the phone exterior:

Two instead of one Speaker grilles at the base of the phone. Higher chance that you won't miss your phone call because there's two speakers making noise haha. Suitable for parents who place their phone deep inside the handbag or somewhere under the newspaper (just some random example ya)

I notice that elderly like to make their phone ringtone as loud as possible so I guess this design is good for them. Also good for me lah because I can have louder music when driving.

Redmi Note 4 Performance: Super long battery life for daily usage

With the current specs using Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Octa-core processor that's 20% more power efficient than Redmi Note 3. You can expect whole day usage of your Redmi Note 4 without needs of power bank especially when it has 4100mAh battery capacity.

I was really surprise that it can last me whole day usage including my daily social media update and scrolling on Instagram, Facebook and even YouTube.

Why is it suitable for parents? Your parents no longer run out of battery with this phone as I believe they aren't as active as us by using social media. (I might be wrong) Perhaps sometimes they watch more Korean dramas with the phone on it or playing Candy Crush/Clash Royal mobile games on their phone.

To be honest, I didn't expect that this budget phone can play mobile game with high 3D Graphic Interface requirement. I tried install and play Onmyoji阴阳师 on Redmi Note 4. It doesn't looks perfectly smooth on the phone but I am glad it still works wonder on this gadget. Hence if your Redmi Note 4 can play this game, it can install and play almost all mobile games.

PS: I gotta warn you that Onmyoji阴阳师 is very addictive game to play so make sure you manage your time well. It is one of my favourite RPG based game which initially translated from Japan version. Kinda cool graphics that made me fall in love with it.

Redmi Note 4 13 MP Camera: More than enough for clear day photos

At the RM700 price point, I don't expect much from the camera of Redmi Note 4. It does have the simple-to-use exposure control button so you can adjust image brightness easily. And it has NINE (9) different Photography Mode including the simple Manual Mode which you can adjust only White Balance and ISO. Overall, Redmi Note 4's camera can perform well during daytime or when have enough brightness indoor. Check out the photos below to see the Redmin Note 4 photo quality:

For lowlight mobile photography with Redmi Note 4, you need to have steady and stable hand to capture clear photos. I don't like to use straight flash to capture photos at night. So the only way is to press the shutter few more times so that you can get the clear shot. Hold your phone using both hand and keep your elbow close to your body for a steady shot. Overall the lowlight photos turn out pretty good once you manage to keep your hand steady =)

Now let's talk bout selfie, I mean the front camera of Redmi Note 4 =) Other than the built-in Age Teller, it has the Beauty Mode too so that you can have flawless skin. Trust me your parent gonna love it when they saw their own skin so smooth and looks young. Below are some #TCSelfie with friends using Redmi Note 4:

Overall Review of Redmi Note 4

In conclusion, Redmi Note 4 is considered a budget phone that can do all activities with reasonable performance. Even when you play 3D games that required high specs, it is still executable and probably with just some delay. After all, this is considered a budget phone with reasonable specs. The most surprising thing that I find is the battery life for Redmi Note 4 is amazing long. I can use this phone whole day without charging and play games from time to time.

Why do I say this is a suitable budget phone for parents? Well, I did a survey with my friends before and most of them mentioned that RM1,000 is their budget for parents new smartphone. Therefore Redmi Note 4 could be your choice if your budget is around that.
