As a Hotlink user, you will have the chance to participate in Hotlink K-Pop Academy that transform you into K-Pop stars. There are total five members who were selected in this Academy and will go through several traning in order to transform them into real K-Pop Stars like BIGBANG. The five members are Jimmy Tan, May Ng, Alex Ho, Khairul Najmuddin (Erul) and Joe Chang Yew. Joe was absent due to his DJ work, he came back for his MV shoot after work.. 

During the Hotlink K-Pop Academy, the students went through singing and dancing lessons, a makeover continued with a K-Pop Music Video Shoot where each of them dressed up as their favourite BIGBANG Members. You may read our quick interview session below:

Q: What was the reason you join this Hotlink K-Pop Academy contest?
Alex: Throughout my experience I have always doing K-Pop dancing and through this K-Pop Academy, I can get more exposure by going through their singing and dancing lessons, and also being able to cast in the Malaysia version of BIGBANG Music Video.
Jimmy and May: As a part of RED People full-time Artist, we have been shooting a lot of videos including music video and online drama. This is one of the good experience that we wanted to have. May will come out with a new EP together with her female group members from Amoi-Amoi.


Q: Now you guys are always together, how is it like being in this academy?
Erul: I've been in Entertainment industry for quite some time, so everything seems normal and I've get use to it.
Alex: Compared to others, I am a fairly new person in entertainment scene, it was nerve wrecking at first because all of them seems to know what they are doing and I was like duh... yeah *Erul comfort Alex not to cry* But yeah they are being nice to me

Q: What do you guys want to achieve in participating Hotlink K-Pop Academy?
Arul: For me I would like to gain more exposure not just oversea but in my own county too. Knowing that some of my fans are K-Pop lovers too, this could be a good thing for me to work together with Hotlink for a great opportunity and experience.
Jimmy and May: We hope that besides improving our skills and talents, we will able to take the journey oversea in the future.

Of course, all five of them do wish to meet BIGBANG members in person, Hotlink is currently in the midst of the discussion with Korea management and hopefully they do get the chance to have a meet up or even party together =)

Q: What's the hardest challenge so far?
Jimmy immediately responded with, "Make Up" *everybody burst in laughter*. Jimmy also added that because this K-Pop Music Video is a parody and they need to change to many different outfits. In additional notes, May will dress up as G-Dragon, Jimmy as Top, Alex as TaeYang, Erul as SeungRi and Joe as D-Lite.

I was at one of their K-Pop Music Video Shoot location - Kompleks Pasar Borong Selangor and it was an eye opening experience to see how the MV shoot progress. Since it is a parody, there will be Malaysia elements like Durian fruits included into the MV. A gang fight between Durian Lovers and people who anti-durian. Among all of them I guess May who dress up as G-Dragon will enjoy the most as she will have the striking colored long hair and have different outfits throughout the MV shoot.

Q: Once they have ‘graduated’ from the academy, what will their roles be as Hotlink’s K-pop ambassadors?

Once they ‘graduate’, the 5 K-pop fans will remain part of the Hotlink family, where they will be given first-hand access to the all of Hotlink’s upcoming K-pop related events. This includes getting their hands on special experiences such as backstage/meet-and-greet passes, soundcheck access and so much more.They will also help spread the word on Hotlink’s K-pop activities via their social media channels.



Q: You mentioned that you will be launching a special contest in conjunction with the BIGBANG concert in July. Can you share the details?

Beginning 22 June, we will introduce a new contest for fans where they will have a chance to win tickets or special experiences to the concert. Fans can either take part in the video contest to win access to the “Soundcheck Party”  and Rockzone Tickets worth RM798 each or participate in the re-post contest to win tickets worth RM698 each. The contest will end on 16 July.

To win, here’s what fans need to do:

Video Contest (to win “Soundcheck Party” access and Rockzone Tickets worth RM798 each)
Step 1: Take a creative video of themselves lip-syncing to their favourite BIGBANG song
Step 2: Post their video on their Instagram, Facebook or Twitter account and share who their favourite BIGBANG member is and why
Step 3: Follow and tag @hotlinkcomms and include #HotlinkBBVIP #Hotlink #LIVELIFELOUD in their caption.

Re-post Contest (to win tickets worth RM698 each)

Q: What other exciting K-pop activities/events can Hotlink customers look forward to this year?

Customers can definitely expect more exclusive experiences and access to the hottest events, but they are not just limited to K-pop! In fact, we have teamed up with the long-running Internet music series The Wknd Sessions, which was launched at The Bee, Publika on 12 June as part of Cooler Lumpur Festival.

Now recorded in front of a live audience, the series is known as The Wknd Sessions Live (TWSLive), featuring performances by ten noteworthy Malaysian acts held at multiple venues throughout Malaysia.

In conjunction with TWSLive, The Wknd and Hotlink will also be launching The Wknd Recording Fund (TWRF), structured to function as a platform for new Malaysian musicians to record, produce, release and market the recorded material.The winner will walk away with a professionally recorded single and an opportunity to perform for a live audience at the final TWSLive event, together with the headliners of the final show.

As exciting as it is to bring international acts to Malaysia, it is equally important for us to support local artistes and give them a platform to nurture their talent and grow their fan base.
