Airplane Timelapse using Samsung NX1

It has been a while since I blogged about Samsung NX1 and its hidden features. If you are new to Samsung NX1, it is a smart camera that can help you take 4K resolution timelapse photos and videos at the sametime. Below is a timelapse video that I've captured and created straight from Samsung NX1. Check out the nice airplane landing and taking off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport =)

Airplane Timelapse After Rain - Samsung NX1

I captured the timelapse photos in square photo format because I wanted to frame it for Instagram. Resolution was 3088 x 3088 with 350 DPI. Therefore I can enlarge it and it still looks clear when I create this 1080p timelapse video.

All photos were captured at ISO 800, f/10, 20 seconds. Below are some photos among all photos taken using NX1. Photos has been enhanced to give a better look and view of the sky, but the airplane lights in the air are all real. You can only see the magical moment when you watch the video.

High dynamic range can be achieved even after sunset

Above photos were captured after a storm, therefore you can see clear view of the neighbourhood. You can even see the airplanes lights far away from here. Right next to the two tall building on the left.

Other than night scenery timelapse, I tried to capture thunderstorm photos and timelapse video too. It was harder than I thought but  you should try it when thunderstorm strike your neighbourhood again. I will share it during my upcoming post. Samsung NX1 is weather proof, therefore I have no doubt putting it outside the balcony. Just remember to tie it well in case the strong wind decided to blow your camera away ;p

Things I wish Samsung NX1 can improve on timelapse photography

  1. Although I have enough space on my memory card, the maximum length of the timelapse video that I can capture can goes up to only 1 minute (600 frames) . I wish Samsung will update their firmware again which allows longer timelapse period so that I won't miss out certain shots. Just saw an announcement of 1.30 firmware update that we can take 3000 frames now. Yoohoo! Download new NX1 firmware here
  2. There is a minimum 2 seconds waiting interval too, which I hope it can be decrease to 1 or even zero second because there are certain shot that I wish to get continuous photo especially for my night timelapse video.
  3. Hopefully in future I can choose to capture only timelapse video excluding the photos. Meaning NX1 can automatically convert all those images into a timelapse video instead of keeping the large size photos in the memory card. At least with this choice I can choose to do high quality timelapse video when left not much empty space on my memory card.

How to take timelapse photos and video using Samsung NX1?
Go to your "Camera Menu", find "Interval Capture", then you set the Interval time, Count, Start Time before you start your Timelapse photography. Remember to enable the Timelapse function to "On" for a timelapse video accompanied with your high reso photos.

If you have any question regarding taking timelapse photo/video using Samsung NX1, leave a comment or email me because I would like to help you while improve my photography skill together =D

I am currently looking for more interesting places to do timelapse photography in Malaysia. Any good location to share? I know KL Tower and Petronas Twin Tower City view is a must, but can't find the right location yet =)
