The BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2012 (Technical) Winners

Kakiseni, a twelve-year performing arts platform introduced Backers Audition Kuala Lumpur 2012, a new program that advocates the importance of private funding and partnerships with the performing arts practitioners and producers.

In attendance at the afternoon tea ceremony, the Director-General of the Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara (JKKN) Dato’ Norliza Rofli said: “As part of the government’s intent to develop and promote the arts in Malaysia, we are happy to work with Kakiseni to urge more corporations in the private sector to contribute to the growth of the Malaysian talent pool and its creative content. In line with that, we will be introducing the annual Distinguished Patron of The Arts to honour and encourage such participation.”

At the event, Norliza, together with Kakiseni’s Low Ngai Yuen announced the inaugural Backers Audition Kuala Lumpur 2012. Also in attendance was Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi, PEMANDU’s Director of Communications Content & Infrastructure, Business Services NKEA and Dato’ Muhamed Juhari Shaarani, the Director-General of Istana Budaya

Backers Audition KL 2012 is an initiative by Kakiseni to provide financing to practitioners and producers of performing arts shows. Backers Audition KL 2012 will be represented by a panel made up of members of the private sector and relevant organisations who will evaluate applicants and proposals for funding. Kakiseni will act as the coordinator of this initiative.

According to Dr. Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek, Director Communications, Content and Infrastructure NKEA and Business Services NKEA said, "Backers Audition, identified as a quick win during the The Dasar Industri Kreatif (DIKN) Lab in January this year, is an example of an initiative that allows the industry to unlock potential business opportunities in the creation and marketing of creative content. We hope to see more involved support from the private sector in providing funding to practitioners so that the Malaysian creative industry can continue to thrive and contribute to a robust economy.

The Dasar Industri Kreatif (DIKN) launched by YB Dato' Sri Utama Rais Yatim, Minister of Information, Communications and Culture aims to help spur the creative industry in the country as an economic generator. There are nine work streams identified under the DIKN. Within the Creative sectors, there is Music; Film and TV; Creative Multimedia; Performing Arts, Craft and Arts. Then there are the enablers which include Marketing and Distribution; Human Capital Development; Finance; Intellectual Property.

During the lab, each of the workstream, identified their quick wins for 2012 and 2013 towards achieving the Gross National Income (GNI) of the MY Creative Content EPP by 2020. The Backers Audition is one of the first quick win projects within the Performing Arts work stream.

“Today marks a new milestone for the performing arts industry. We are embarking on a new journey towards creating a more conducive environment to enable the development of creative content and collaboration. It is extremely crucial that there are now strong signals from the government to the private sector that giving to the arts should be included among their contributions. This support and access from both the government and the private sector will ensure that most of the non-profit performing arts are able to concentrate and dedicate focus to their crafts,” said Kakiseni’s Low Ngai Yuen.

In recognition of the critical role of art and design in the performing arts scene, the 9th BOH Cameronian Arts Award 2012 (9BCAA) took the opportunity to celebrate outstanding achievements in costume, light and set design as well as styling and make-up in the Dance, Theatre and Musical Theatre categories.

Caroline Russell, CEO of BOH Plantations, said: “We have been entertained, inspired, intrigued and motivated by numerous performances. And we have acknowledged the talents displayed – be it in dance, musical theatre, acting or singing. Hence, it is only timely for us now to give due recognition to the men and women who have played a huge part behind the scenes in making the magic happen – the technical talents.

“BOH is proud to play our role in not only developing, but also nurturing the importance of technological expertise within the art community.
