Pentax Optio RZ10 Review @ Awana Genting Highlands Jungle Treking. Macro Best!

Still remember my last post about receiving Pentax Optio RZ10 to review? This is a special dedicated review of this compact camera. First of all, I choose it because it is obviously lighter than my DSLR. When I first get it, I hope it meet my normal expectation from a compact camera and something that my DSLR cannot do.

Between, you can read about my previous post of MSS 2011 journey @ Pasar Ikan Bakar Seafood Barbeque & Blind Trail @ Awana Genting Long House. Besides the awesome seafood, you can also see the moment everyone of us look so helplessly during the night blind trail.

Below are all the photos captured using Pentax Optio RZ10 followed by my humble review:

Woke up early in the morning @ Awana Genting Long House. Everyone was getting prepared for morning jungle trekking. I choose to bring Pentax RZ10 because of its light weight plus we gonna climb mountain and hills with empty stomach.

Everything looks okay for me when the sky is just cloudy without sunshine.

A picture of Hijrah with yawning Feeq behind. It is good that Pentax RZ10 has Face Detection focus. I can easily detect their faces using this camera.


Termite @ 'Anai-anai' was found crossing on the tree bark. Thanks to the Macro mode and Dual Shake Reduction features I manage to take this photo by just holding the camera with one hand. The color looks a bit dull because I didn't use the flash and not much ambient lights in the surrounding area.

But after the sun rise, everything looks more vibrant and different. Thanks to Pentax RZ10's 14 effective megapixels assuring exceptional image resolution with high-performance imaging engine capable of reproducing true-to-life colors

For example the mosses, the two pictures on the right were captured when the sun was still hiding behind the cloud. But it turn out so nice after the sun light shined on the mosses (picture on the left).

More photos for you to see the result of having the sun light as part of the ambient lights and eventually created stunning day-light images. There were some people chopping off bamboo stick for camping purpose I guess? Hanis posed for me.

Pentax Optio RZ10 still doing good with backlighting. Still can see my face clearly with the sun behind.

Now a good automatic selection mode is prerequisite in every compact camera. It is good that Pentax RZ10 has the Automatic Selection of the most appropriate shooting mode and it always change to super macro mode whenever I shoot something in close distance.

The jungle at Awana Genting Highlands has so many tiny little leeches that you won't wanna have it getting stuck on your limbs. Here's a Macro Shot of the leech.

Another close up of the leech on Jard/Bella leg(Both of them were the leeches prey). You still can see the fresh blood in leech body. For plain browncolour leeches like this, it is not poisonous. But make sure you avoid those colourful leeches because usually they will leave itchy mark on your skin for a long period of time.

Another thing that is really good about Pentax Optio RZ10 is the 10x zoom features. Genting Highland was looking so far away from here but with the 10x zoom it just look so near.

Here's a fully zoomed in photo of Genting Highlands and Chin Swee Temple. Can you spot the Pagoda and Buddha statue?

Vibrant colour of the scenery picture as long as the sun light is illuminating the surrounding.

You can see Dwi Andi and the iconic creature that can be found in Awana Genting Highlands' jungle.

Talking about video recording, I like it's clear voice recording in the video although the person was standing far and you can hear animal's howling clearly too. Portable enough to bring around and especially good for concert recording while DSLR are not allowed~

Besides jungle trekking, abseiling is one of the sport that you can hardly bring along your DSLR. This is Rizma walking down the slope.

Used the 10x zoom features again to focus on the people down the hill. Clear enough =)

Zaid and Bella abseiling together. That's the moment their "scandal" revealed ever since they did this together. Oh wait, they did wind sailing together @ Golden Palm Tree too!

Again the voice recording is clear in this video. I was going to try out the lean forward abseiling. You can see how Daniel was hopping down like a rabbit while abseiling.

And this is the direct flash. So far it meet the requirement of a compact camera at night ~

You can also put a photo frame before capturing a photo.

The thing I love the most about Pentax RZ10 is it can focus object in less than 1cm distance. Which means you can have Super Macro Shot of the watermelon with its seeds.

Pentax RZ10 is convenient enough for me to bring it to anywhere. Especially during activities like jungle trekking and abseiling. Retail pricing at only RM999 and can record HD Video too. I think it will be doing great for recording performance of concerts where DSLR are not allowed =)
