ntv7’s The Perfect Gentleman Winner - Joel Sih
Despite the harsh comments given to Joel Sih by the panel of judges in the beginning, the 31-year old Klang boy still kept his charming smile and fought his way through, which made him worthy to be crowned the 1st Perfect Gentleman in ntv7’s reality show – “The Perfect Gentleman”. The grand finale of the show went LIVE yesterday, 8th October 2011 at 6 p.m. from Sri Pentas 2, Plaza Alam Sentral in Shah Alam.
“Before The Perfect Gentleman, I did enter many other competitions but nothing compares to what I experienced and gained from this show. I would like to thank my family members who supported me all the way as well as ntv7 for providing this platform to showcase our talents,” said Joel.
Joel not only claimed bragging rights, but also took home cash and prizes worth up to RM80,000 and beating five other strong contenders in the competition including John Lee and Jake You who won first and second runner-up respectively. Both John and Jake were also rewarded with cash and prizes worth up to RM50,000 and RM30,000 each.
Meanwhile, The Most Popular Award went to Chong Kong Jie, while the Most Photogenic Award was taken home by John. Both were presented with cash worth RM2,000 each. The Most Popular Award was voted by viewers at home prior to the finale. The other two Top 6 finalists who did not make it to the Top 4 were William Joey Lewis and Wilson Choo.
The grand finale yesterday night began with a spectacular opening by the Top 6 finalists who wowed the studio audience and viewers at home with a short magic show. There was no room for panic as the finalists had to go through four rounds of test that night and being watched by a panel of “intimidating” judges who specialises in different fields each.
They are – Debbie Goh (Most Popular Actress, Golden Awards 2010), Mark Lee (Singapore’s top actor and host), Jiang Pei Pei (experienced mentor, actress, and host), Gillian Hung (President of the Malaysian Official Designers’ Association), and Jane Wong (magazine Editor).
Nervousness got the best of the Top 6 in the first round where they had to give a short introduction about themselves but quickly regained confidence in the second round where they were given 30 seconds to give their best answers to questions on life, relationship, and career matters. In the third round, viewers were given the chance to catch the talented side of their favourites through a short talent performance by each of the finalists. The Top 6 were also tested on their hosting skills when they took turns to co-host during the finale with The Perfect Gentleman host, Hoong JiaHui.
Kong Jie, a state basketball player, was the first to showcase his talent with a combination of basketball and dance routines. Wilson and William on the other hand, belted out some renditions of love songs that had the audience waving their arms to the tune.
There were even more surprises from both Joel and John as they performed some “extreme” feats, which wowed the audience. Dressed in full martial arts attire, Joel showed off his masculine side with some kung-fu steps, while John sets the crowd on fire with his fire act performance.
But it was oil & gas engineer, Jake who stole the limelight with his over the top, hip hop performance.
Top 4 were then selected out of the six finalists and were then put into another round of Q&A test. Showing no fear, Joel took on the question and answered with full confidence in which he was the only finalists who were praised by the judges for giving a good, solid performance. “I’m really proud of Joel’s performance today as he gave 100% to it,” said judge, Jiang Pei Pei.
“We would like to thank our sponsors, partners, and the media for their kind support in The Perfect Gentleman. We would also like to congratulate Joel for his win and we’ll definitely let Malaysians see more of him,” said Lai Cheah Yee, Manager, Brand Management Group, ntv7.
Hong Kong’s sweetheart and Cantopop singer cum actress, Stephy Tang made a special appearance during the finale and belted out two of her familiar songs. Stephy was formerly the lead singer of the pop group, Cookies.
Local hip hop band, dayDream were also there that night to perform.
The Perfect Gentleman 2011 is the ultimate contest of personality, talent, and style as hot guys from all over the country sweat it out to win the coveted title. The reality show is a bold initiative from ntv7 to search for the finest man in the country, while providing an opportunity for young men to showcase their talents. Since April this year, a series of promotional activities took place including four auditions in Johor, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Kuching. The eligible age range for contestants is 18–45 years old.
Throughout 12 episodes of the competition, contestants had to go through rigorous sets of cuts. The first is audition rounds in which only 30 were selected. These gentlemen were then scrutinised further and only 16 moved on to the next level. These 16 were given personal coaching from the judges made up of local and international renowned stylists, designers, celebrities, and so on. They were stretched to the limits in a series of challenges and eliminations to produce the final six contestants. The Perfect Gentleman aired every Sunday at 6 p.m., since 17th July 2011.
