Temple Grandin by National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM)

As part of a continuous effort to advocate and educate the pubic on the need for early intervention for children with autism, The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) in association with HBO asia, held an exclusive screening of the Emmy and Golden Globe Award winning HBO Original Movie, TEMPLE GRANDIN on 22 August at TGV KLCC.

I was invited by Amelia on behalf of NASOM to watch a movie named Temple Grandin, a real story about how Temple overcome autism. The trailer doesn't tell much about the story but I Am glad that I went for the screening. Quite interesting and meaningful =)

Temple Grandin Synopsis

Winner of 7 Emmys, 1 Golden Globe and 1 Screen Actors Guild Award, Temple Grandin paints a picture of a young woman's perseverance and determination while struggling with the isolating challenges of autism at a time when it was still quite unknown. The HBO Original Movie chronicles Temple's early diagnosis; her turbulent growth and development during her school years; the enduring support she received from her mother, her aunt and her science teacher; and her emergence as a woman with an innate sensitivity and understanding of animal behavior. Undaunted by educational, social and professional roadblocks, Temple turned her unique talent into a behavioral tool that revolutionized the cattle industry and laid the groundwork for her successful career as an author, lecturer and pioneering advocate for autism and autism spectrum disorder education.

According to Teh Beng Choon, Chairman of NASOM, a recent study on the incidence of autism in South Korea revealed a shocking 2.64% children or 1 in every 38 children have a disorder that can derail their development. In Malaysia, no official statistics exists. This inevitably leads to inadequate capacities for diagnosis, therapy, management and support of this community living with this life-long disability. In turn it often result in little or no formal education of this autistic child, dysfunctional families, abandoned careers of their parents to take care of their autistic children, and generally shattered futures all around.

Movies entertain but ones with powerful storyline can do much more. Through watching Temple Grandin it will able to help raise awareness about autism in Malaysia and that through early intervention, children with autism can achieve great things, just like Dr. Temple Grandin.

Temple Grandin On Mark Zuckerberg and Overcoming Autism

Temple Grandin stars Claire Danes, who won an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her outstanding performance in the title role. The film co-stars Emmy Winners Catherine O'Hara with Julia Ormond and David Strathairn. Like Danes, Ormond and Straithairn each won an Emmy award for their supporting roles in Temple Grandin.

Directed by four-time Directors Guild Award winner Mick Jackson from a screenplay by Christopher Monger and Writers Guild Award winner William Merritt Johnson, Temple Grandin is based upon the books Emergence, by Temple Grandin and Margaret Scariano, and Thinking in Picture by Temple Grandin.

TEMPLE GRANDIN will premiere on September 2 at 10pm on HBO (Astro Ch 411)/11pm on HBO HD (Astro Ch 431). Do watch it if you have Astro because not only it helps you understand more about autism, you will be amazed by the story it self. Not forgetting the humor elements in the movie haha. Somehow I wish I have the ability to think in picture too, it is such a great ability to help me learn something new and remember something important. Maybe that's why I like to Capture Precious Moment with my beloved Nikon D90 =)
